New Trends in the Classroom: Unlocking Education's Full Potential

With the rise of different technologies in our society, it is no surprise that they have started to make their way into the classroom. From AR/VR to AI, there are new trends popping up in Education changing the way students are learning.

Gamification:

Gamification introduces technology into the classroom as a tool to keep students engaged. It makes learning fun and interactive and could become a core feature of teaching, especially after the impacts of COVID. We can see that traditional teaching styles are being reshaped to enhance student engagement and understanding.

Micro learning:

Every child works and learns differently; micro learning takes advantage of that and focuses on using structures to adapt to different attention spans. Some examples of micro learning include, shorter lessons with a focus on one topic at a time, interactive structures to keep children engaged and keeping lessons as flexible as possible, with every student taking the learning at their own pace.

AI Programs:

The use of AI programs has grown significantly with online AI chat programs being a common tool used by both students and teachers. Students are using it to help them write their essays, whilst teachers are using the extra help to assist with lesson planning and email writing. Whilst AI has been praised for its ability to make tasks simpler and quicker, others have concerns about false information being shared and a move to a dependency on technology.

Augmented and Virtual Reality:

AR/VR can be used to make learning more engaging and interactive. These technologies allow students to immerse themselves in their learning fully and absorb knowledge in a new and different way. It favours children who learn differently and is still an exciting tool or activity for all. Through the immersive experience, students can engage with their topics through surround sound and visuals instead of through a textbook with a lump of text and a few images. This makes the classroom much more interesting and children may be more likely to remember their topics with a clear and vivid memory.

Many of these new teaching trends are exciting to see in the classroom. They are bringing different styles of teaching to education and widening the approach to learning. Whilst some of these tools have been flagged for valid concerns, such as AI chat programs acting as 'glorified cheating' or Gamification being more of a distraction and less of a learning tool, with balance, these technologies can still be a big benefit to the education system.

They can make small tedious tasks easier and favour different learning styles. This is a good step into making adjustments for children who understand information differently and creating an inclusive classroom environment. Learning can be fun and interactive and it is important to keep it that way to help children and young people excel in the education system.
